In case of M12, the actual hole created was 10.274mm. Some investigation later, I found when I created threaded hole the size of the hole is a predetermined value. After machining I found the chamfers on the M12 holes were missing. Sometimes, it's from our team here at Next Generation Tooling & at other times it's by one of the innovative manufacturer's we represent in California and Nevada.I ran into this issue when I was machining a part which had a M12x1.75 holes and I was using forming Tap. Check selection of tap, carbide tap may be more suitable then high speed steel taps.Use tap holder with length compensation and torque overload system.Use tap holders with axial/parallel floating.Increase number of tap flutes to provide more chamfered teeth.Improve coolant/lubrication to assist the effects of the tap speed.Common problem in multiple spindle applications on transfer lines. Check actual drill depth, drill may have slipped back into holder.Note that cutting and roll form taps use different size tap drills for same size thread. Improper selection of tap for material and threading application. Change or regrind tap drill more frequently.Work hardened drill hole and hole chamfer. Check suitability of surface treatment for material being tapped.Loss of surface treatment from regrinding. Change the specification of the grinding wheel.Loss of tap hardness by excess hear during regrinding. Review markings on tap and determine if it is suitable for class of fit required.Īll reasons stated in torn and rough threads.Tap selected too small for class of thread fit required.
